This is a very nice lens. I got it earlier this year for $849. It is a great lens for portraits also. Gives great bokeh not as good as the 135L but still nice.

Actually, many Canon lenses, including this one, are weather sealed only when you have a front filter installed. If not you leave the internals open to dust and rain.

Unless you are exclusively using it for portraits, you don't need UV filter. Hood does the job better for macro.
