Optically speaking, the 1.4 isn't really sharper wide open. However, the USM is much faster than the AF system in the 1.8, and the build quality is much better. Plus, the 1.4 has full time manual...

The 50mm 1.4 is EF, so it works with full frame. The 55-250 EF-S, on the other hand, is for crop sensors only. Using an EF-S lens on a FF camera can actually cause physical damage to the mirror...

I'm pretty sure you can use these for FF cameras (at least the 50mm 1.4). Just be aware that you'll get different quality with FF vs 1.6 crop at different stops, but I think that's true for all...
