Yes, it will stream off a Windows Network Share, Linux Network Share, Play off a DLNA server.
I'll admit the Roku UI is better than WDTV, but my primary use is to stream from an in home media...

One thing I will tell you is that these devices are silent (minus any attached hard drive noise). My older XBox 360's noise drives me insane!
The XBox 360 is kind of picky about what it will play...

I have a Patriot Box Office (PBO) with original firmware.
I had one issue playning MKV via a specific thumbdrive but it plays them with every other thumbdrive.
It plays AVI in preview mode...

Yes, but you wouldn't really be "streaming"... you'd just be playing off the usb drive through the HDMI out to your TV.
