I'm sorry but a 1-5% performance gain from Windows 7 to Windows 8 isn't enough to upgrade. Where as upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 there was a 35-40% performance boost.

I think you got it wrong. You could bring back start menu using registry, but only in Windows 8 preview version. In RTM, the start menu is completely removed.
