Breaking the case usually voids the wty, most HDD mfrs track the serial #s pretty tightly due to counterfeit product and stolen shipments.

I just got 3 of these. Pretty nice so far. Very fast with usb 3.0 controller. moving 2.75TB of data from another usb 3.0 drive says it will take 6 hours. NOTE: this drive has a built in dock....

It should void the warranty, yes. Whether they'll do a warranty exchange on a unit with a broken seal is still up to them. These external drives cannot be warrantied as bare drives for any reason.

Definitely a pretty good price compared to what other retailers are selling 4 TB externals at right now. Not many retailers are carrying this Seagate model... and those that are don't have any...
