I think you're thinking of XL-ATX .
E-ATX is wider, not longer.
As for the fit - I can't say I've tried it myself, but the extra 2-3 inches in width may extend over your cable management...

Do note that the 24-pin power header is rotated sideways. If your case doesn't already have cable management holes, you're going to need at least another inch to bend the cable.

Cable management might be a problem for some, but as you said, buying a $2 24pin extender would solve that issue.
As for E-ATX in an atx mobo, I have put plenty of them into regular (quite old)...
