I think you're thinking of XL-ATX . E-ATX is wider, not longer. As for the fit - I can't say I've tried it myself, but the extra 2-3 inches in width may extend over your cable management...

Cable management might be a problem for some, but as you said, buying a $2 24pin extender would solve that issue. As for E-ATX in an atx mobo, I have put plenty of them into regular (quite old)...
