Maybe try the Ubuntu Installer for Windows (wubi). If I remember right, it installs Ubuntu to a virtual drive file, so you don't have to worry about repartitioning. You can then "dual boot" into a...

If this is a program that needs to run all the time, then I would recommend a separate machine and an actual install or seeing if you can up your RAM for the VM software.
If it is not a program...

Running off of a flash drive only uses up memory when you are running a Live CD version. You could also install the OS to the flash drive as long as you can boot off of it.

If it were a live cd type of boot no. If it were an install onto a flash drive, yes.

No I'd be willing to do that, but if I ever want to get rid of that partition, I feel like it would be a hassle to fix the Windows bootloader since I don't have any Windows Installation media.

Yup, x3 - easiest solution here is to add more RAM to the machine.

Not an expert but from your description, it sounds like you are actively using both the VM and the host OS simultaneously. In your situation, does the VM run fine but the host OS chugs? If so, then I...

I'd try a lighter o/s than ubuntu as the guest. Probably something like Arch with openbox would give you an improvement at the cost of a bit of a learning curve (don't expect anything to be done for...

You mean the Linux install? I don't see why not as long as the boot loader knows to boot from the flash drive when pointing to the Linux install.

I didn't think about that, but I'd rather not since the majority of my applications that I use are in Windows. Also, I'd only need to use the Linux environment once in a while.
