I had my friend do what you said, but the referrals are showing up as existing referrals, not new referrals even though she signed up today.

The people you referred can go into their profiles and click on "Settings & Options" > "Edit Profile" and if they scroll down a bit they can add your name in the box that says "Referrer"

The problem with that is the contest that was active ended before she wrote me down as her referrer. It's no big deal, I understand that it would have been different had it been a regular giveaway....

It only counts as a new referral if she signs up while that particular giveaway is active. Any giveaways you enter after that you'll get credit for existing referrals.
