I'd prefer it turn off when the TV is off...it's not needed if the source device is off. May take a few seconds to reconnect when the TV is turned on, but that's the same for laptops and other...

Direct (wired) is always best for reliability, speed. It's much less prone to interference by other wireless devices and RF. I only use WiFi for internet browsing on my tablet and laptop.
