I am guessing that no pick-up confirmation was received. Once the pickup confirmation is sent you should be good. At that point (in theory) the items should be held on the side for you.

I agree it shouldn't matter. They should be able to return it back to the gc, just like a credit card........sears is similar to this practice also. I usually buy with credit card, then return/rebuy...
