I bought 2 at 89 then.. both were: MODEL: ST3000DM001 PN: 1CH166-301 FW: CC24 Site: WU DOM: 11/2012 From what I could gather, 1CH166 with CC24 seemed to be up to date firmware. I did not...

I use the WD green drives as backups for my faster Hitachi and Seagate drives. If you have 15TB of storage you need 15TB of backup but the backup doesn't need to be as fast.

why not just use 2 drives and parity like win8 storage spaces, unraid, or drive bender? or raid5 on card or windows server

Both the main and backup storage are raid 5.

I skipped due to past problems with Seagates. Reviews state these are still buggy drives

got 2 on BF, both dead within a week of using them. High pitch whining, bios recognized them maybe 25% of the time

ive had very good luck with these drives. scored 3 on BF. all running 24/7 in a data store with hyper-v. reads/writes are fast for such big drives.

I feel like I should have picked up a couple of those $90 newegg bare drives as well, but then I think that I should be able to manage for a year. I don't know. would be nice if more $90 sales...

Don't remind me... It was such a tragedy that I was very unfortunate to not score that deal then...
