I've had good packaging on these from amazon. 2 drives, individual boxes with plastic suspension on each end. Inside the big box was paper to keep them in place.

I just got my 4 drive from newegg. Two of the drive static bag was rip. it looks like one of the drive with the tear has a metal chip on the bottom. Doesn't look like they improve there shipping.

If the drive is off, the heads are parked off the drive in a carrier. Banging it isn't going to create bad sectors. Plastic ends are, in fact, what WD and Seagate recommend the drive be packaged in.
