Yeah, a hammer drill kinda hammers as it drills...great for concrete block (exterior walls) and things of that nature. Way overkill for simple drywall ;)

No the drill is variable speed. When it says two speed it means it has has two ranges of speed. Low speed is to 1100 RPM and high is to 3100 RPM

Not *all* hammer drills can have the feature turned off, but pretty much all of the new ones can (including this one) turning it into a standard drill. Bought the 7.0 amp version of this drill new...
