So far, that's the best solution that I have seen or heard of, unless you never use the cam, in which case you can disable it.
I'm not an average user, so it wouldn't be a fair assessment to say...

My paranoid friend did this a few years ago. He brought his laptop over, and the first thing I noticed was the crappy tape over his webcam. I asked him "Um...is something wrong with your webcam?"

Surely the AV and malware programs we use, can recognize the virus.

Well. there was no mention about a mic virus, and even if there were, it wouldn't be anywhere as critical as the webcam.
