it has a sim, but for verizon 4G LTE / CDMA Sim only, i don't think you can unlock it for GSM (AT&T 3G / TMobile fake 4G) usage because it does not have any GSM radio to begin with.

It has a sim, but it's a verizon phone CDMA/LTE... ATT is GSM/LTEish not the same I believe You can't beat Cowboom's return policy. It's super easy to do a return no questions asked.

Yes you need a donor phone for 3G with the second thread. You shouldn't need it with the Sprint version. A Donor phone is essentially (a form of) ESN cloning, which to me is way too much work.
