FYI to run the dell diagnostic just hold down the FN key and the power button.
You should have a win 7 key under the laptop or under the battery. you just need to download a copy of that version...

It is possible that the HD is failing, as your friend said.
Do you have the means to slave the drive in a USB case or by inserting it into a PC?
Then you could do a diskcheck/repair.

Just wanted to say thanks to those that helped. It was the hdd that had failed. Ordered a new HDD it arrived 2 days later and using the links provided I had the laptop back online with in an hour....

If so, it's best to not play around with it anymore, until you can slave it to save the data.

Something like this happened to my system last week. It was indeed a faulty hard drive!
Boot windows with Slax and make the necessary backup. You mght be able to access your files. Give it a try!

I would like to try and repair it, (just to see if I can) but I am also going to order a new drive tonight.
Also, the drive was never imaged. so no windows 7 installation disc. I hate for him to...
