I made a recovery disc from an .iso but it has been "searching for windows installations" for several minutes now. EDIT: nothing on the drive needs to be saved.

FYI to run the dell diagnostic just hold down the FN key and the power button. You should have a win 7 key under the laptop or under the battery. you just need to download a copy of that version...

It is possible that the HD is failing, as your friend said. Do you have the means to slave the drive in a USB case or by inserting it into a PC? Then you could do a diskcheck/repair.

Just wanted to say thanks to those that helped. It was the hdd that had failed. Ordered a new HDD it arrived 2 days later and using the links provided I had the laptop back online with in an hour....

Something like this happened to my system last week. It was indeed a faulty hard drive! Boot windows with Slax and make the necessary backup. You mght be able to access your files. Give it a try!
