Yes, AT&T is GSM and uses a SIM card. You can only use it in other countries if it is network unlocked. FYI, this phone is by default locked to AT&T.

Gophone works in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. To use it in other countries you need to unlock it.

For $40, I'm debating buying one as a vacation phone. ATT is GSM with sim cards right? So I could use one of these with a prepaid sim card in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, ... all over the world...

Turning these into kid-phones is an interesting idea.
$40 phone + Kytephone app + google voice number + skype (and/or a prepaid sim... ) would make it a decent phone for kids who aren't ready for...
