I would ask the seller to relist it so that you can buy it from an active listing. I don't think Paypal backs up purchases if you just send the money manually to a seller. Some sellers out there...

Agreed. And usually within that listing does it state whether it is Ebay protected. No listing, no listing of whether Ebay protects it or not.

As long as the seller can prove that he sent you something, PayPal will likely side with him. They may side with you if you argue that the item was not as described, but it's pretty much a crap...

PayPal covers transactions that are not eBay related...after all, you can use PayPal to make payments for stuff online through a myriad of other retailers.

Ditto, just went through the same yesterday. Had the seller relist as a Buy it Now. Get the added protection of ebay and seller feedback and make a little ebay bucks.
