never use raid to save data yada yada yada.... but if you still want to do it, use the most varied bunch you can. e.g. one hitachi, one wd, maybe close with another hitachi from a very different lot...

That's surprising. The few Hitachi's I've had have been excellent. BackBlaze (the online cloud backup service, with over 50 PETABYTES worth of drives) uses Hitachi as they have had the least failure...
