Since you are rooted, a factory reset can be handled by wiping the phone and reloading the ROM from Recovery menu's. It is really very easy to do and you won't lose your root.

Rooted and custom room are different, he most likely just has a stock rom/ recovery. so factory wiping will reset root. Not that its that hard to reroot.

Except there is no way to uninstall all of the carrier bloatware without rooting. There should be a way to get rid of carrier apps that aren't needed.
