You might consider the Glock 27 in .40 caliber.
A friend just picked one up; said it was far better than the Springfield XDs in .45.

I have an LC9 works well. My dad had the Ruger LCP, Which is the .380 model. The LC9 is a tad bigger and feels better to me.

Take a look at the Ruger SR9C if you are ok with going just a little bit bigger. It comes with a 10 round compact mag and an extended 17 round mag to give you the full size grip.
