I agree, thanks I will give this a try...can't hurt to argue that point. True, chances of DOA are much lower getting a refurb back from WD. In fact, it is highly likely that I am getting a...

All my recent shipments of drives from Newegg were quality. Each drive was in a separate cardboard box, suspended in end-caps. Those individual boxes were place in a shipping box, and the dead space...

You're right in your more careful reading of the article and thanks for the link. I run a pair of NAS boxes, each with multiple non-RAIDed hard drives. One of them is the main server and backs...

Guys, please take a moment and think. Newegg reviews are full of DOA reports (157 reviews, avg 3 eggs). Amazon reviews are mostly 5star (233 reviews, avg 4.5 star). One could take this information...

Sadly this is incorrect. You should NOT use this as a single drive as at a hardware/firmware level this drive has been configured to "fail quickly" if it has an issue reading data from a sector,...

If there are dents in drive(s), that would be physical damage, maybe. I don't think the guarantee will cover this. Been seeing alot of complaints about Newegg and how they pack them. Some...

this price has been on for a while. I bought two a month ago, also from newegg, with $10 off $50. this is not a hot price, but still decent correction: the price was even cheaper in January: 2...

The Red series seems to be designed to operate in RAID arrays, multiple drives interconnected to act as one unit. Some older WD drives were notorious for dropping out of the array and weren't...

I concur. I've ordered 4 of these from Newegg and a few from Amazon. I never found any difference in shipping and packaging between the two companies. This "packaging sucks from Newegg" reminds of...

In reviews such as the one linked to below, they highlight TLER as a feature that makes WD Reds good in RAID configurations but also test/recommend it for use in single drive NAS applications. ...

Yes, that is one of the downsides of hardware RAID. I am a big fan of using software RAID with ZFS. Rock solid and performance can exceed hardware RAID in the right circumstances.

My concern with RAID was that I might not be able to recover the data if the NAS SATA controller died on me and, in any case, the continuous uptime that RAID provides was not critical in the home...

Except that the RMA/refurb (if it is a refurb) from WD still has a 3-year warranty and it was refurbished (if it was) by WD itself. Your luck at that point even with a refurbished drive from WD is...

Seriously guys, if its DOA send it to newegg and get a replacement. Thats a no brainer. you have 30 days, just chat with them. WD is going to give you a re-certified drive, screw that.

The Newegg packaging complaints are outdated. The drives I've received from them in the past few months have been meticulously packaged.

This drive has specific features that make it a bad choice for being a single-drive. It should only be used in multi-disk arrays in a NAS device or with a hardware RAID controller

Straight from the manufacturer: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810 Click on the NASware tab. For some reason the direct URL to it, does not work.
