I don't what they have done is make you buy figures which represent extra lives. I don't think the point was to compare this to older games but that to keep your kids from getting frustated by dying...

The game is pretty easy, even on the hard setting. My 6 year old can make it through most levels and get the no lives lost achievement. The body count can add up quickly when my 3 year old joins...
