As soon as you pull in a new drive, the PS3 will force you to reformat. Lost some save files like this because Sony thought this was a good idea.

I've done a PS3 HDD "upgrade" years ago and had an issue or two, but not the one you had. Formatting via PC can't hurt as the PS3 is going to format it again anyway.
