Not always. I usually check other reviews/teardowns to make sure it's not like some drives which have the USB interface solder'd directly onto the drive. Also I'm not sure about the warranty. :P

i too have hitachi drives removed form hitachi enclosures. hitachi knows the drives were in enclosures by the serial numbers. if you try to make a claim on the warranty it will not work it...
