From reading the OP my guess is the USB port may be the problem. I would try a different USB cable to charge and access computer to see if that changes anything. Loading a custom rom like...

My AT&T Galaxy S2 has been acting up recently. It will show charging and mtp initialization randomly. The worst thing is that my computer won't recognize it when it's plugged in....

Thanks. It stopped acting up after a while. Hope it stays that way. Might try installing ics on it.
