for GPU, mostly for when you have like 2 back-to-back cards, and thus won't be able to cool the 2nd one effectively with air for CPU ones, usually it's just for quieter operation

if it mounts on the standard mounting holes, it won't get in the way. You're putting a CPU cooler on a GPU. I mean why bother with this mod on a 6950, you're not gonna be pushing it much...
