Yep, very comparable. I personally prefer the Mossberg, but the 870 is a good gun too. I have a folding stock on my Mossberg and keep it by my bed.

Just a heads up, make sure you hold a shotgun well if there is no buttstock. Using a shotgun with only a pistol grip and no buttstock is dangerous for your wrist.

Birdshot's not going to have as much stopping power as buckshot, but up close it can be pretty nasty. Also, birdshot will be less likely to over-penetrate walls.
