Just like buying a car - you buy what you need. For some people a Chevy Aveo and a motorcycle would be more useful than a Lexus.

I'm happy with my $99 Lenovo Thinkpad. I'm using it right now. It is over five years old. So I'd recommend Lenovo. :bounce:

Bow-chica-wowow / That's what she said. What are your views on Touchscreen? That normally adds ~$300 to a computer, but it does limit the resolution. Touchscreen on a laptop is like adding a...

I have the XPS L502x and enjoy it. At first I though the backlit keyboard would be "nice" but now I love it. Can you use an external monitor?

There's no 27" IPS screen in the world that's as portable as a laptop. My seven year old ThinkPad surfs the internet and does office type stuff just fine, though it's no longer a top performer.

I don't see a good reason for such an $$ laptop. 1. for at home use, you should be using an external keyboard, mouse, monitor anyway. I would rather get an $500 ips 27" monitor and $500 laptop ...

I don't think anyone outside of Apple and Google are making retina LCDs for notebooks. The ThinkPad T530 checks most of your boxes. I don't know much about the trackpad, but the stick is better...
