You can do a weekend drive to San Francisco if you want. 6 hour drive/1 hr flight.

Also look at citypass.com for great deals on attractions. I got tickets to Disneyland, sea world and universal studio for $300/person.

zoo and safari park.
at 9 he kinda getting to old for legoland.Its over priced and waste of money IMO
