I don't believe you can do anything more than 5.1 with optical.

I can never tell if these mobo's have optical audio output?? It looks like this has gigabit ethernet which I really need for HTPC. It says it has 8 audio channels...does that mean its 7.1 capable...

I have almost this same combo in my HTPC and it's been great. I have the B75-D3H, and I can't really figure out the difference. Regardless, definitely recommended.

There's no optical audio on that board. It has 3 audio jacks on the back so could do 5.1 analog, and probably headers on the board to get optical or coax digital output (dolby digital/dts passthrough...
