Elements is about twice the size and is not powered by USB. They are normally a decent amount cheaper for those two reasons, and if you need an external just for a desktop, there is not much reason...

Yes shouldn't be a problem. I have swapped a smaller capacity drive in my laptop with a larger capacity drive I bought in an enclosure and had no problems. Just have to be careful with the enclosure...

No, you can NOT. New WD drives have USB soldered to the plate, they don't have the regular SATA connector.
