for 800 you'd probably be sitting on it for quite awhile. You can get them new for 750 on sale. I sold mine for 700 fairly quickly on Craigslist. 700-750 seems to be the sweet spot.

If I remember correctly, when the 5d2 first came out, EVEN after a year there were very few discounts. Actually, trying to just purchase the 5D2 was difficult. The 5D3.... not so much. I think...

Seriously what competition you are talking about ? D800 ? Not much competition in Semi pro FF IMHO other than D800. For competition there is 6D sub ~$2500 range with 24-105L lens.

Save the $3000, and invest in a $1000 camera body. Put the $2000 difference into glass. My god camera body prices are a joke in Canon's lineup.

Doubtful. Canon announced the 5D Mark II in September 2008, and announced the 5D Mark III in March 2012. That's a 3.5 year gap between releases.

I looked at Canon price watch for both... and I think the moral of the story is that the mkiii was overpriced to begin with, which is why it has decreased sharply recently. But if you look at it...

One could turn that 174 into a 50mm 1.8 which sells for around a hundred, so that credit can be turned into real cash... hmmm

If you have Discover or Upromise you can get 5% cashback at J&R through them, which might be preferable to rewards points.

Click through with Discover is indeed 5%. It looks like you can also get 2% from J&R when you do this. For kit, the price would be $3488.88 - $174 (discover) - 69.78 (J&R) = $3244

Thanks. Time flies. I didn't realize it was 3,5 years between them. I agree, then it will probably be at the very least another year, if not longer, until we see a successor. :(
