Thanks OP, and especially for the XBMC tip. I found some recommendations here: http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/seven-films-to-watch-and-celebrate-akira-kurosawas-birthday-on-hulu/ If you're not...

As much as I love old samurai movies (especially the Zatoichi films), I don't believe I have ever seen a Kurosawa film. I might have watched one during IFC's "Samurai Saturdays" a long time ago, but...

Whoever posted this on the front page (not the OP) misspelled Kurosawa's name. It's "Akira", not "Arika".

Thanks OP! You might want to correct the mis-spelling of his first name in the title;)

Would you be kind enough to post how to do this. I just installed XBMC 12.1 on my mac and can not get the add on to function. Is this available to work on a Mac. Thank You,

Thanks for the link. I use XBMC, but that makes it easy to see them all listed.

Ran, Kagemusha, and Yojimbo are all excellent films (The last being remade for Western audiences as A Fistful of Dollars, and later Last Man Standing.) But if you're only going to see one, see...

I hate to say it but I was bored with the Kurosawa film that I saw. Cannot remember the title of it. It's strange cause I like many independent films.

Considering the mentioning of Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, etc. and their Western remakes, it should be as no surprise that Kurosawa mentions John Ford as one of his biggest influences as a director.

There is a typo in the front page link. Akira not Arika.
Post #58412084 added 03-23-2013 1:18 AM by Zoe Moon in Archived Deals
You might want to get his name right in the FP title, it's Akira, not Arika. :) BTW, Ran should be on that list too. It's a shame Hulu didn't offer Dreams, it's a favorite of mine, very different...

I don't think so. I believe the original poster got it right. Whoever moved this to the front page created the typo. There were already two pages of comments before that happened.

Yes indeed, another great one. It seems quiet at first, but even my little one stayed up all the way to see the end, like midnight. (I had forgotten to note how long it is.) Hot deal! Now I just...

Despite it being Japanese, Kurosawa's stuff is very palatable for Western audiences (OK, maybe not Do'deskaden...). That's the sign of a great filmmaker. My favorite Mifune role after Seven...

Just finished watching Madadayo. A very slow movie, but an interesting look into more recent Japanese culture. Worth watching if you are in the right mood and interested in other cultures.

Thanks a lot, I own over half of these. Kurosawa was an amazing director, but the Mifune movies were always my favorites.

They're certainly amazing films, but some are slow at points. I feel like they probably could have cut 30 minutes from the near 4 hour version of Seven Samurai, but it is what it is. As for a...

Hidden Fortress was an influence for Star Wars. Don't forget the color films like Ran and Kagemusha.

He is easily one of my favorite actors. It's no coincidence that he and Kurosawa worked together in some of the most highly acclaimed movies during that period, and even today.

I see lots of praise for Yojimbo, but I enjoyed the follow-up Sanjuro more. Perhaps the pacing was just better suited to a Western audience (me). Rashomon puts M. Night to shame in the plot twist...

Yojimbo is good. I am surprised that they used guy called Jim from my college class for inspiration. We used to call him Yojimbo.

Okkk, now this is awesome. I love Akira Kurosawa. If you've never seen any of his films DO IT! Well worth it. Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Sanjuro are awesome. I have a lot I need to watch though.
