So, what exactly is a gayberry?

Quote from wiles :
Uh, who's gonna take this one?

I'll give it a shot.
It's a made up term (I think Briang developed the slang but for some it caught on like wildfire) for any kind of berry or fruit that a person would use to make a fruit smoothie to drink, instead of drinking beer like a manly man, such as Briang. Cheers
Some people even speak the language Gayberrolian.

How'd I do Matt?

Isn't Patron what rappers and "gangsta wannabe's" drink? Well, that plus Cristal?
Many people mistakenly consider Patron to be the be-all, end-all of tequilas, which it most certainly isn't. As I mentioned previously, Patron just doesn't have any flavor and is certainly not worthy of its high price tag.

Another common misconception is that clearer is smoother, and that is generally opposite of the truth. Aged tequila is smoother and more complex in flavor, which is why Reposados are nearly always better than Blancos. Blancos are generally more fruity. This is why they are good for margarita mixers (they complement the lime very well). Like a good scotch, tequila does better with age, it just doesn't take as long. It's also possible to over-age tequila.

Even more complex and flavorful than Reposados are Ajos, which are also very good and aged longer than Reposados. They are also much darker in color, generally very smooth, but they also tend to be rich. I find them a little too rich for me, so I prefer the Reposados in most (but not all) cases.

Another common misconception is that only expensive tequilas are good. What you pay at the liquer store does not have to empty your wallet to be a good tequila. Most important is that the tequila is 100% agave, and not mixed. I've picked up a bottle of 1921 Reposado for $22 before they won their Silver Medal. You can still get El Tesoro 750mL for around $25 if you know where to look, and many other non name-branded tequilas can surprise the hell out of you. In fact, that's how I found 1921. Now it is becoming an incredibly popular brand, deservedly so.

Raddish - since you are El Senor on tequilas... quickly explain to me the difference between "clear" and "gold" tequilas, (if you haven't done so in your previous post.) Is gold tequila not 100% agave? is it just an additive for color?

nah. its just been aged in barrels. white is by definition smoother. gold is more flavorful, up to you if you want smooth or tequila flavor

I explained in the post just above yours. It's all about aging. Blancos can not be aged for more than four months to be considered a Blanco. Reposados are aged for four to eleven months. They are aged in oak barrels, often in old bourbon or whiskey barrels which adds to the complexity of their flavor. As tequila ages, it generally gets smoother in texture, richer in flavor, less fruity, and starts to turn from clear to a gold or amber color. The longer it is aged, the darker it becomes.

Now, I am only speaking with regard to 100% agave tequila. I don't drink tequilas that are mixed.

Yes, I've eaten the worm, but not in a true tequila. 100% agave tequilas will not have 'worms' entered into their distilation process. What you are talking about is a drink similar to tequila, made from agave, called mescal. Think of mescal like moonshine. It can be pretty good, but it's not tequila, it's not 100% agave, and it can be pretty harsh and rough around the edges. Not really a lot of flavor either.

Incorrect. White is by definition fruitier. Tequila tends to get smoother as it ages.

Incidentally, I am by no means slamming blancos. I like them, I just prefer a richer, smoother, more complex tasting tequila, which is why I prefer (in most cases) Reposados.

I'm also not slamming Patron. Patron makes a good tequila, it is just not worthy of its price. Much, much better tequilas can be had for much less money.

Yet another reason I have never taken much interest in drinking alcohol - I don't know much about it and would end up doing it wrong! Wind up with some bottle of rot gut that someone in a store told me was good stuff.

To be considered 'tequila', it has to be at least 51% agave. In addition, it can have added coloring and flavoring (kinda like soft drinks), fake smoke flavors, fake oak flavors, additional alcohols not derived from agave, and other 'impurities'.
