Beginner needs help choosing which compact camera to buy!

106 14 June 4, 2017 at 10:01 AM in Chat (12)
Hello everyone. I am looking to purchase a compact camera in the range of $600-$700. I see some good options that had good reviews on some websites. I am a beginner with camera's and don't have much knowledge with them. So a simpler camera to use would be a big plus. I have a newborn and this camera would be used mostly to shoot him and my wife would love to take nature photos outdoors. So what I would think I am looking for is a simple, point and shoot ready camera that offers great quality pictures.

Some options I have found in my price range are:

Sony RX100 lll, Panasonic Lumix LX10 or LX100, Panasonic Lumix ZS100, Nixon Coolpix P900, Canon G7 X Mark ll.

Those are the best options I could narrow it down to myself, unless someone can mention anything else that could possibly be better.

Thanks for all the responses and help in making me purchase the right camera for my family's needs!

I'd wait a few months to see if your kid is cute enough for photography. You can't really tell with a newborn so wait and see. Baby

A couple years ago I got a Sony a5100, refurbished. Had about 1300 photo count. It was a kit, with both the 16-50 and 55-210, a memory card, and a nice case for around $450. It does not have a viewfinder like the a6000, but I rarely would use it. I use the touch to focus very often, which the a6000 doesn't have. The lcd has a daylight mode that works well, you can see it in bright sunlight very well (you can also see the battery go down when it's turned on). People will say the included lenses aren't great, which, they aren't the best, but they can be decent. Set on auto, it can take very good pictures. With the 16-50 it's very compact. I added a Sigma 30mm 2.8 and the Sony 50mm 1.8. So, auto works pretty decent, and it has room to grow if you want to do more. I don't really take many picture of people, just stuff around my place. I have a point and shoot, long zoom, small sensor that I use for longer range, and I keep it on the tractors when I'm in the hayfield, etc. You can't beat them for something that "just works", and takes very decent pictures as long as you don't want to work on them much, zoom in, etc.

I considered similar Nikon models, and also considered spending too much money on an RX10. Spending that much money, I'd prefer something with changeable lenses for more options.

OP,
There's a good, solid reason why the point-and-shoot camera industry is dying.....why bother with a point-and-shoot when your camera phone can give you comparable pictures?

As others have suggested, I think you should consider a decent DSLR. The Canon SL1 can be had for about $375 or less. If you add a decent lens to it (Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 which sells now for about $375 too), it'll give you great pictures that I don't think any camera phone or point-and-shoot can match. So, that'll still be close to your budget of $600-700 dollars.

I think most P&S cameras are going to have larger sensors than a phone's camera. Depends how generous you're being with "comparable".

It's relatively speaking.......most point and shoot camera photos aren't going to be much different than good smartphone camera photos to most ppl out there. My point though is that if the OP wants to spend that much for a point-and-shoot, it might be better to just consider a dslr. However, if he only wants to spend $200 or so, then a good point-and-shoot would be ok.

There is a lot of truth in that. I have a DSLR which comes out about once a month (maybe.) The problem is that it is bulky and you have to carry it, whereas your cell phone is always in your pocket at a moments notice.

That being said, when you want a really nice picture, the DSLR is nicer than the cell phone.

Oh, check out the manufacturer refurbs. I have had a lot of luck with two different Canon refurbs and they fit in your budget.
This is right in your price range, and has a great all purpose lens (I recommend something like this rather than the 18-55 and 55-250 combo as it is one less thing to carry around.)

A SLR does not have to be complicated to use but will offer more flexibility this kit offers a bit more for less $$ the refurbs I have purchased have always been fine too!
