If you're calling this an MP3 player then you are right, you probably don't need it.

I'm not much of a Pono expert, but I felt the push with it was pushing people into buying music from Pono. Even if it was a good device (I honestly don't know), people were not interested because of the strong push to buy new music. This device definitely plays Hi Res music, but the focus is having a player to play music, not getting you to buy a device so you will buy music from them. It also allows the use of apps, so you could use something like Tidal for music you do not own. Fiio makes hardware and deals in the audio industry. Fiio is already successful and is not banking on one device for anything. This is definitely a niche product.

Is there any difference in sound quality between the x1, x3, and X5, if I am only using low powered headphones, and also might be plugging the player into a D amp?
I just wanted something slimmer.

I can tell you that there was a considerable sound difference between the X1 and X5 using low-impedance headphones (32 & 50 ohm) with no amp. The X5 completely exposed the X1's flaws. The X5 is richer and fuller sounding than the X1, no doubt.
