What happens to my phone number if I want to port in a different phone number?
If you're asking what happens to the "original" phone number if you port in another number to an existing line, it will get absorbed by Sprint. If you want to keep the original number as well, you would need to port the new number to a new line. Then, either keep the old number on the other Sprint line, or port it out to another service or park it somewhere.

Cheapest readily available is Moto E4. Others may be able to suggest cheaper, more creative solutions.
I read that I can't use the Verizon version. Can I use the Boost Mobile version of Moto E4 for Sprint's free year?

Boost version will only work on Boost -- you need regular unlocked version ($130 retail)

Contact google if you bought from them... they replaced mine even though it was out of warranty.

I got my Nexus 5x fixed 21 months after purchase from BH Photo. I sent to LG & got it back within 7 days. Hassle as always but could have been worse. Free shipping both ways. The same phone was returned to me. Works fine so far, about a month. Just fyi.

I read the OP and Wilki and see that this will only work when porting over an existing line. I'd like to get this for my daughter but she has never had a phone before so has no phone number to port in.
Would the solution be to open account on a different service and then port the number in or is there an easier way? If I need to open an account with a different vendor first, what would be the cheapest one to use? I already have some Verizon prepaid and AT&T Go phones laying around that have never been activated that I could use. I'm currently on Verizon Postpaid and could add her to my account then transfer her to Sprint also if that would be the best way. Thanks for the help.

As far as Phone Number goes, ANY number, prepaid or postpaid wili work. Just make sure that there's no penalty involved in whatever you use, as porting out course cancels the previous service. Just make sure that you have the account number and pin code for whatever number that you choose to port. If you don't want to use any of the options that you mentioned, you could also use Google Voice (slightly complex; read the Wiki), or use a TMobile SIM, and activate it on a prepaid plan.

TMo prepaid -- activate pay go service with new number but don't add any funds

Amazon has TMo SIM kit: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LPPHHFK/

Another option is Google Voice number -- see wiki

If you decide to go the TMobile route, you can get a SIM for a few dollars from ebay, or for free from an Apple store.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING REGARDING THIS OFFER IN A STORE NO MATTER WHAT OR YOU WILL NOT GET THE PROPER PLAN.

Please explain, what do you mean by "Port number FROM Sprint"? Or do you really mean, port the number TO Sprint?

IF you mean TO Sprint, then call TMobile, activate the SIM and don't fund it. Make sure that you note your new phone number and set a security PIN. Then call the Sprint Promo Line (866-782-8777) and tell them that you want the Free Year Promotion. For porting, they will ask for your TMobile phone #, acct # (same as phone #), and security PIN. No matter how many times they ask, or what they say, REFUSE the "Device Protection" (unless you really want it :-( ).
