It shows compatible with Ting Sprint or Ting Tmobile or both?

says compatible with GSM network, which I assume is TMobile.

I also found that the devices that do work without issues have(supposedly) model number SM-G950U1, mine is SM-G950U.

Correct re that being TMobile.
That means that Ting does not think it is compatible with Sprint either.
If it is compatible with both, it would say so.

Well, I think you need to check if you were shipped the wrong version. SM-G950U1 seems to be the unlocked version as you say.

There are two meamings of "unlocked". One is the uuniversal version and the other is a branded version that is not locked.

You need the universal version (or the Sprint version of course). The other three carrier branded versions do not have the right bands expose by theirs ROMs, unfortunately, even if they are not locked.

All the US models now start with SM-G950U then next 3 characters define color, and the last 3 characters which define carrier. VZW-Verizon, XAA-Unlocked version, SPR-Sprint, etc.
Example SM-G950UZKAXAA is S8(smg950u), black(zka), unlocked(xaa). Your phone is not passing cdma on ting so it is not in database. If your phone ends in XAA then it will qualify as S8 special edition. You need to contact Sprint tech support and get a knowledgable tech to add it. Other people have done it but thread is so long I dont have the number.

All reports I have seen is that they are forbidden to do so for the S8. I think one single person claimed to have done so, probably by social engineering.. It probably would not work anyway unless he flashed it.

The XAA version is the universal unlocked version that will work on all US carriers. No flashing needed and less bloat than carrier software.

Oh yes if he has that one he is fine if he does as you suggested - you are exactly correct.
But I thought that Sprint already had all the IMEI's for that version in the database in the case of the S8 - I could be wrong or some could have gotten left out.
We need to find out the exact version he has.

Yes, I dont have s8 so dont know if complete model number is in about phone or just on box.
If his phone doesn't have Verizon bloatware it probably is the universal-unlocked version though. Yes you would think they would have the imei loaded already.

My S8+ has something like that under Service Provider SW ver. in settings under About Phone:
SAOMC_SM-G955U_OYN_SPR_0184.
I have the Sprint version. It may be a pre-release or internal use version though in my case.

That is a good point about which bloatware it has being a good indication of which model it is.

What is the cheapest way to get on ATT, Tmobile, Verizon, or their MNVOs, before porting to Sprint?

Go to Apple store and ask for T Mobile SIM card, they will give it to you for free. Call T Mobile to activate the SIM card on the pay as you go plan, they will give you the phone number/account number and PIN for free, without you putting in any money.

Thanks for the tip. If I have a sprint sim that is compatible with my phone. Do I have to buy the sim from Sprint? I read that I could call to activate using my own sim, is it the way to go?

It doesn't have any bloatware and is a clean samsung. I'm going to try calling Samsung and DEMAND (more like beg Smilie ) for a solution. I bought an unlocked phone from them and it should work everywhere.
