I just tried signing up. It verified the phone and attempted to do a credit check. It gave me an error and said something like, "its not your fault, its ours. Please call out us to sign up for this promotion".
What is that all about? My credit rating is over 800.

Always call, 1-866-782-8777, do not try online.
You'll be transferred to the credit dept for the credit check and even then you may be asked by the credit dept rep to go to the Sprint store for an ID check.
Just make sure you have a Sprint account # before going to the store, and do NOT allow the store rep to do anything else but an ID check.

I think this is where my mistake was yesterday. They ran my credit over the phone but said I needed to go in store to verify.

I went in store and they guy needed all of my credentials and put me on the phone with a rep who asked me a few questions to ensure my identity. I told him twice that my credit was already run but I'm fearful that my score was hard pulled twice.

I'm otherwise all set up and have a wonder if I'll see two hard pulls pop up in my alerts.

I have an unlocked Moto G4 with amazon ad's that I bought for my son last year that was never activated on any carrier. However, I personally have Sprint SERO service.

If I bought an H20 wireless sim card and then activated it with the $10 card would I then be eligible for this deal?

Also, if there is any easier way than activating it with a Pay as you go please let me know. Since I tried to enter the imei and his google voice # and it said i was ineligible.

Check wiki on 1st page for Google Voice instructions if you want to port a GV number

If you just want to port a dummy number then search on eBay for "T-Mobile number port" -- couple of sellers on there selling TMo numbers for porting

H2O pay as you go w/ $10 funding will work but they won't give account number for few days which might delay things depending on when your H2O SIM comes in

Current Sprint customers are not eligible for this offer unfortunately and there is no way aroubd that other than having completely closed out your prior Sprint account 45 days ago or using a family member's SSN for a new account. If you put the new account in you son's name and SSN, that can work.

As to why it said ineligible, that is puzzling. Others may have suggestions on that. Maybe try again.

90% of the problems have nothing to do with credit worthiness or credit rating, but are instead because of other reasons such as having had a prior account with Sprint, or if your answers to the identity questions do not match up exactly with what the identity provider has from public records.

But in this case they just want you to call so it could be anything.

Damn, this is one of the things I always hated about sprint. It shouldn't be this difficult. Any other time I've switched carriers I've just purchase or ordered a sum and did everything online.

I remember back in the SERO era everything I did dealt with dozens of 1 hour phone calls to foreign countries. It was such a hassle I eventually decided it wasn't worth it.

Thinking about adding a line. Will the new line have an "end of deal" date the same as my other free byod line? Or 1 year from opening it say... Today?

Holy jeez, I finally reached the top of BYOD mountain. A huge thanks to everyone in this thread providing feedback & instructions. In case it helps anyone, here's the bumpy road I took...

1. I had a phone number active on Ting that I wanted to keep/port over to Sprint
2. Bought an unlocked E4+ from amazon for 100 bucks
3. Ordered a Sprint SIM card online
4. Activated the new device on Ting with a GSM SIM card
5. Once the E4+ was activated, despite showing on GSM network, the Sprint eligibility checker said ineligible due to owing Sprint money for the device
6. Contacted LiterallyUnlimited on reddit; he flipped whatever needed to be flipped and bingo bango the Sprint checker then confirmed eligible
7. Called the Sprint promo #. Hit a snag with the credit check; the rep from the credit side said I needed to go into a Sprint store with 2 forms of ID.
8. At that point I was prepared to hang up and call back to try again, but once the credit rep was off the line the Sprint rep was already on top of it, saying she was gonna call again because I shouldn't have to go into the store. I was on hold for a while, so she might have had to twist the next credit person's arm a bit, but once off hold I was informed they could complete the credit check over the phone... 3 verification questions later and I was over the credit check hurdle.
9. The initial porting part went smooth - I provided the porting info, provided credit card info to set up auto pay, went thru terms & conditions, and that was the end of it.
10. Powered on my E4+ with the Sprint SIM in it... for a while it said invalid SIM card and it also seemed that the configuration part was failing/stuck. I tried making a call and was unable to.
11. Long story short, this eventually cleared after about an hour, and everything is now seemingly working fine. I powered the device off/on a couple times along the way but not sure if that actually helped at all. But I didn't call Sprint again... I just waited. So my advice would be to just be patient with that activation/porting and give it at least an hour.

It aint easy but it can definitely work. Best of luck to everyone.

Ah you had a previous Sprint account. Everyone who previously had a Sprint account is asked to call in so that they can reconcile the account records. That's likely all it is in this case, nothing more complicated than that.

Man am I glad I called in to finish the BYOD instead of trying it online. There were so many things that could have went wrong, but the Sprint rep handled them all! It took over an hour total.

1. Sprint checker was showing my phone as ineligible. I had to call my previous carrier from one year ago (TELLO) to have them switch it from prepaid to sprint.
2. Sprint couldn't make a new account for me because I had one like 15 YEARS ago. They had to call another department to remove my SSN from the old account.
3. Sprint asks the standard "equifax" security questions that you usually need to answer when you get a mortgage, etc.. "Which city did you live in from this list.. What vehicle did you have registered at this address.. ".
4. My porting failed because my account number wasn't correct (my fault). The sprint rep actually called me back the next day before I could call the other company, and did a 3-way call to get the port completed.

The Sprint reps were super-nice, especially considering I am getting free phone service. Quite a difference from my previous 15 years with them.
