No you do not need a new sim. Sprint sims are not tracked and never expire and are always reusable.
Do i need a new sim for porting out of sprint to somewhere else?

Only to the extent the other place requires a sim for whatever phone you intend to activate on it to host your number while it is there.
If you have another gsm phone or even dummy IMEI, you can use that with whatever gsm sim you have or can get.
It does not have to be the same phone.

My husband just got the Cox Cable bill on our TV-Internet-Phone bundle and the prices have gone up yet again. He wants to ditch the phone to save money because he uses his cell most of the time anyway. I would like to keep the phone number because so many of my friends, relatives, doctors, etc. have it.

The Cox account is in his name alone. How can we port the number out of Cox and into my name so that I can port it to Sprint and get the bill on my credit card?

I have a current sprint phone thats paid off and unlocked no contract on a sprint plan under someone elses name. I would like the quickest and cheapest way to port the phone somewhere else then back to sprint under my name that doesn't have an account yet. Would i have to buy a different sim if i dont need to use the phone until its back on sprint? Thanks
Quick and cheap is free(+gas cost) tmobile sim at apple store. Port to T-mobile pay as you go($10 minimum), port back to sprint under new social.
Done in a day or two.

I'm in exact situation as far as wanting to port out sprint phone and port back in under new ssn.

Would this sim from amazon work?

It seems that with eligible sprint BYOD phone and with compatible SIM card in Hand, I can activate the phone online as well as port out the number.
But Its been advised in this thread to call at 866-782-8777

Can anyone please explain why calling is better than activating through online?

Thanks.

In the past, it forced you to buy a sim then and there and wait for it to be delivered if you did it online. Are you saying this no longer the case?

I have also seen cases where it rejected IMEI's online but accepted them when calling, but those are uncommon.

So far I checked 4 lines with 4 different phones along with 4 compatible SIM cards and it lets me check out . It didn't reject any IMEI as I am using the compatible BYOD phone. However I didn't go beyond the Credit check yet.

Just trying to see whether its better to call or just do it online?

Did it ask you for sim card iccid yet?
There is no harm continuing if you want.
Some prefer one way, some the other.
I just would not pay the $10 a sim card if it asks for that.

Yeah it is going to require you to order the sim cards from them at the end and wait for them to arrive if you do it online. I would not want to wait for those to arrive but you can if you want......I think it is a flat charge of $10 (not per sim) which is not too bad.

If you call instead, you can provide your own sims and are not required to buy them from Sprint..

But since you want to do it online, go ahead if you want. That is a perfectly reasonable course. You will just pay a little more and wait a little longer, that's all (actually with 4 phones it might even be cheaper if you get 4 sims for $10, although sims for iPhones are free at Apple Stores).

Also if you do it online it becomes a two-stage process:
(1) Sign up and order sim cards to be shipped
(2) Wait for sims to arrive, then continue to activation

Sometimes the link between the two stages breaks down and you have to start all over with ANOTHER credit pull etc. And there can be other temporary account/plan related problems.

No Virgin or Boost or Sprint Prepaid phones work on Sprint postpaid.

Will the original Sprint sim used with Sprint work immediately with the new plan after this two-hop port? I seem to recall reading about a waiting period. Is that not needed? I just want to minimize the risk that the deal expires while I am on T-mobile temporarily...
