Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

I would get them to give you the imei ahead of time and check it out carefully including talking to Sprint Account Services re ownership and unlock issues with this imei (note other Sprint departments will not do this kind of check - only Account Services which is not at all the same thing as Customer Service).

That was a unique situation with the Essential deal which required people to own it for 18 months.

Ideally check with Sprint ahead of time with the IMEI just to rest assured. Call any support number and ask them to kick it over to Customer Account Services which is the dept. in charge of unlocks. This is officially advised by Sprint when buying a used Sprint phone.
in my case, I paid off the Essential phones immediately and after the usual 50 day wait, requested unlock and it was done.

So far, after paying off the phones and after 50+ days of use, have been able to get 5 Essential (bought direct from sprint) and iPhones (bought from Sams and Bestbuy) unlocked.

In fact, I have two Sprint lines which I use to get Sprint phones unlocked.

back to 7/31/19 on main BYOD page. Wonder what the hiccup was with 05/17 and that caused the earlier than normal extension

It's not clear what will happen once T-Mobile has a look at this. I actually see a strategy for Sprint much like SERO where they keep this going forever, but keep the list of eligible phones not updated so that eventually it becomes a legacy/slow lane kind of service that you end up overpaying for. I mean, this kind of plan may become valueless in a 5G world just like SERO's 2G unlimited data became valueless in a 3G world.
The logic in the above post is absolutely correct.

That is reflected in the Sprint - T-Mobile Press Release a couple of weeks ago:

https://newsroom.t-mobile.com/new...forall.htm

Essentially, Sprint and T-Mobile are combining their 5G strengths and quickly transitioning to 5G, making 4G the old 3G and 2G.

By mid-end of next year the 5G train will be full speed ahead and will quickly leave 4G in the dust soon after.

So 4G even for free will not be as attractive as it is now. How many users are willing to stick to 3G and 2G now even for free. Very few.

Not to mention that ALL current 4G/3G/2G devices will NOT BE compatible with the new 5G system and will be really useless.
So spending now a lot of $$$$ for devices like an iPhone X or a Samsung S9, etc., that will be obsolete in a couple of years is not a really good choice.

This Free BYOD offer that will last well into the second half of next year is really a good marketing move by Sprint to transition and keep as many customers as possible in to the new 5G world.

Certainly, there will not be any 5G deals coming out of Verizon or AT&T, but chances are that the combined merged Sprint/T-Mo company will have the most competitive 5G prices and deals, and most customers will choose to stay with it.

Based on the above marketing aims, chances are that the current 7/31/2019 end of the BYOD free offer will be extended.

Flagship phones are "obsolete" after 1 year anyway, but it's not like they won't work after 5g comes out

5g will be super expensive to start, won't be adopted by the masses for several years

i know you have to wait 120 days to be able to upgrade a phone - but I have a few questions if anyone can help:

1. Are upgrades only available via Sprint.com or Corp store - or also other retailers (BB, Costco, etc.)
2. On my online account - it currently shows upgrade eligibility on 5-1-2020. Will this change after the 120 days has passed?

Thanks!
anyone know the answers to the above?

I just signed up 2 days ago thinking it might end today, even though I still have 2 months left on my current plan. I gambled and lost, seeing as how it was again extended. But I still get 10 more months of free phone service, which has worked great for me the past 10 months. I suppose I can't complain.

If it had been pulled, you would be thrilled. At some point it will stop. The merger will definitely impact that. You can start over again in a few months if it's still around!

The easiest and safest way to upgrade after 120 days would be from your online sprint.com account. Going to the Sprint Corp. store or Costco/BB/etc., is inviting issues and perhaps losing the free plan.

Glad I waited to take advantage of the one year free offer. I was afraid I would have to wait until June 1st to get the 7/31/19 end date.

1. Only online or by phone to TeleSales only, not at the corp. store at all or by any retail channel at all or you lose the free plan. It says this on the Sprint page.

2. Yes this happens to everybody. It will change at the right time.
