It's 500 bucks with my EDU discount. So the plan is have a friend open an account under his name. Purchase the phone. Pay it off. Close the account. Then I port my number from T-Mobile to a new Sprint account under my own name with the new Galaxy S9+.

I think everything should go smoothly.
Is it at Samsung? When I looked at that deal I saw this
"Accounts that cancel lines within 30 days of activating on promo pricing may void savings. Restrictions apply. See store or sprint.com for details."
So I passed,
I was thinking of adding a paid line then cancelling. Also didn't want to risk free plans as don't really need it. You may want to verify if you would lose extra $300 off.

Did this last year. Ended up cancelling 8 months in and switching back to straight talk ATT because Sprint has terrible speed and reception in my area of northeast Ohio.

I think that wording may be wrong or out of date info or you may have your choice.

https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile...1rp+tro8z/ [samsung.com]

says specifically:

"WITH VERIZON DEVICE PAYMENT PURCHASE"

"Buy Verizon Galaxy Note 9, S9/S9+ Save $400 off when purchased using Verizon Device Payment Plan."

Also you can get the same deal at BestBuy in any case.
The Samsung Verizon deal is a bill credit promotion. It is not the same as Best Buy because the Samsung Verizon GS+ deal costs about 400 bucks (with a student discount). There is no Best Buy deal that gets you a GS+ at that price.

I am worried you might lose it even if you cancel after 30 days.

The question in my mind is, what is the $300 savings applied to, and how?

For flexlease, to buy it out early, you have to pay the sum of all payments due plus the purchase option price. The question is, what would that be?

If the discount is in the form of "credits" that are applied to the payments, do they not apply if you do not make the payments.

I know you study these things carefully. What do you think?

That's too bad then.

I would just be sure that the Sprint deal might not end up being the same thing, just worded differently. I would get actual payoff price quotes.

The Samsung deal wasnt a typical Sprint flex lease. It was 24 months sprint financing discount, can pay off anytime. It clearly says instant $300 savings and the financed amount of the phone is the low price advertised, so no bill credit and no buyout fee as it was not a lease.
The Verizon financing deal of $400 off said instant savings all week. Then when it went live it said $400 instant saving via credit over 24 months. It was sneaky by Verizon and Samsung to equate instant to credit over 24 months. The finance amount was full price which implied bill credits.

Well, I have to say you have looked at it more closely that I did. I knew you would have.

So you think he is probably ok with his Samsung Sprint student deal then if he stays on postpaid for a month?

I just hope that there aren't more mixups and twists and turns involved.

I just have never seen that 30 day disclaimer on any sprint deal(I've never ordered at Samsung with carrier financing). Usually people just pay off and cancel within 14 day guarantee to avoid plan, activation fees and keep phone. So not sure if that disclaimer just applies at Samsung. I would ask in that deal thread since I didn't see anyone mention it over there.

Here's one for $96 that has all Sprint features such as WifiCalling, VisualVoicemail etc.
https://www.sprint.com/en/shop/ce...SP200SLVKT

Others have their own favorites.

You can try to save the $30 activation fee by ordering both it and the free plan at the same time from the number ending in 8777 given in the Wiki.

(Note that there are both prepaid and postpaid variants of this phone and the only one we have confirmed to activate is the postpaid variant).
