It was completely mechanical. Right after the eggs hatched and the down feathers had dried, the eggshells and baby chicken were put on a moving platform. That platform filtered the shell from the animal - the animal fell through the hole, while the broken shell was too big.

After that, on another conveyor belt, the squawking chick gets thrown down a chute by a person. 1 chute for males, 1 chute for females. I then saw chicks scrambling upwards to avoid the "waterfall" drop that eluded them at the next corner.... it goes on for about 2 mins for various other exercises.

I was just concerned because these are animals that have been alive for MINUTES with frail bones, falling literally 3 - 4 feet at a time, about 5 times each cycle, until finally being "categorized" to sit and probably die somewhere. But what do I know about chickens beside the fact that they taste so delicious drool

Their bones are probably still soft that soon after hatching. But that's so traumatic for a little baby...even a baby who only has a brain the size of a lentil. Sad. Frown

i grew up on a farm. our chickens were free range.

there was a small chicken farm nearby that processed thousand of chickens. it's a nasty business. the chickens have almost no room to move. they just stand around in cages and eat. they're stacked 5 high. occasionally they get moved to new location until they're the proper size to kill.

delicious, though.
Oh my goodness...free range eggs are sooooo good. Licklips They taste so different from grocery store eggs. So much more flavor. The yolks are so much darker.

They're not really thousand-year-old. That's just the name. They're just fermented eggs, probably for a month or so.

i dont know when i'll have in n out again....

last time i went was nov 3 - the night before the election. there were moron teens messing up the traffic lights at midnight on a weekday, holding up their homemade "yes on prop 8" signs. they made my in 'n out run take longer than i wanted.
