Goodbye Keurig...I went to the dark side and now grind coffee beans

70,256 5,366 August 7, 2017 at 12:52 PM
I was out of town for a month and just couldn't get past the fact that you cannot clean the internal reservoir of a Keurig. Being the germaphobe that I am and allergic to mold..and ick...I couldn't get myself to use it again after it had been unplugged for so long Stick Out Tongue

I never really drank coffee when I drove a school bus (a cappuccino here or there doesn't count) in my book.

The Keurig made it simple, quick and clean.. no fuss no muss.

I had a reg coffee pot in the cupboard for when relatives came to town but I preferred my weak, sweet coffee pods.
Even some of the medications I have to take can cause acid re-flux issues so weaker coffee and not being dependent on it made sense... *also prone to migraines anyway.

Well, I spent 3 weeks with my brother and my sister stayed over most nights..and both drink coffee religiously..so yes, there I was drinking fresh ground organic coffee beans.. so it was fairly strong.
I know that if I don't wean off it slowly ..weaker and weaker I'll have one heck of a headache..so I gave in to the dark side and bought a bean grinder and organic beans laugh out loud

You're still doing it wrong. Organic beans have little to do with it.

You need to buy freshly roasted beans. And time does matter when it comes to coffee. The organic beans you buy in the store have been on the shelves/boxes/warehouse/etc. for months. In that time, a lot of the oils and flavors dissipate.

I have a place next to me that sells freshly roasted beans, and I grind them at home. Makes a world of difference.

Also, unless you bought a burr grinder, you're not actually grinding your coffee, but chopping it up into different sized smaller beans. And when you brew that, it gives more acidity and bitterness, than an even ground.

And finally, if you put that freshly roaster, freshly ground coffee into a pot to make drip Facepalm

Don't worry, you wont be a n00b for long.

Yup. Locally roasted and extremely fresh beans will ALWAYS taste better. But, today's packaging insures that nationally roasted beans stay a LOT fresher a LOT longer than they did many years ago. Opening a new bag of whole bean coffee is still a near-religious experience. laugh out loud

Oh, and if a certain Louisiana coffee company didn't stop packaging whole bean French Roast, I would gladly send you a couple of bags. But they quit selling it about a year ago. Ranting

bulb we could make a deal.

I could ship you a bag of freshly roasted coffee, overnight.

And we can find something to exchange that for... I have about 5-6 ideas (depends on how you look at it).

Better than most any other smell, is cutting open a new bag of community dark roast. Of course, we get the bags quicker than the rest of the states, sooo...yummy . We also can grind beans in the store, but mostly it's the gourmet flavors. There's a new LSU dark roast. We haven't tried it. Don't know if it's a marketing gimmick. Have to read and see what the difference is.

Schooby, I don't blame you about the Keurig. I gave ours away about three years ago. The germ thing did freak me out, but also, even with the "fill it yourself cups", we couldn't get a rich enough chip of coffee. We tried differing brands of cups, used our Community dark roast, burr-ground beans, filters water, you name it and nothing came close to what we were used to.

Also, the darker the coffee, the less caffeine. Roasting actually removes it.

French roast = double burned coffee

Dark roast is pretty good, lately I'm more of a medium roast myself.

Also, if you put milk or sugar in your coffee, don't buy beans to grind them yourself. You're killing the coffee flavor Facepalm

And finally, if you bought your coffee at Costco, it'll go stale unless you drink TONS of it per day. Costco sells 2lb bags at a minimum IIRC.

Whatever you don't grind, place in an airtight container, away from direct light and keep them cool (some people say place them in a fridge/freezer, others say that since coffee is hygroscopic (like brake fluid!) a fridge/freezer adds moisture which destroys coffee).
