What's your favorite Christmas cookie?

19,213 2,792 December 1, 2008 at 02:48 PM in Grocery
I'm always on the lookout for new recipies - what is your family's favorite Christmas cookie?

My family goes nuts over spritz. I'm only allowed to make trees and the flower with a red hot in the center. I do a batch with splenda for my mom and call them Festivus cookies. Coverlaugh

I use an electric press for these. I'd be lost without it - I probably make 6 batches over Christmas.

Joy of Cooking Spritz

Makes about 5 dozen 2" cookies

Beat on medium speed until very fluffy and well blended:

1/2 lb (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar

Add and beat until well combined:

2 large egg yolks
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
3/4 tsp almond extract

Sift over the top and stir in until well blended and smooth:

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour

To press the cookies:

If the dough seems soft and difficult to handle, stir in 1 to 2 tbs flour. Cover and refrigerate until slightly stiff but not at all hard, 30-40 minutes.

Position a rack in the upper third of the oven. Preheat to 350.

Press out the cookies leaving about an inch between them. Decorate as desired and bake 1 sheet at a time for 9-12 minutes. Remove the pan and let stand for a few minutes before removing cookies to a rack to cool.

Oh my gosh! OMG Those Playdoh Cookies look great. I wonder how they would go over with my MIL cookie exchange. LMAO I think I will bake them with the stick in them and then wrap them in clear plastic wrap, tie a ribbon around that and make them look like all day suckers. Oh those are perfect.
Thanks for this recipe. Love it.

I was reading down through the comments and she posted some advice that isn't on the recipe itself.

Miki, they are a piece of cake, if you can roll play dough you can make these things. Just make sure you use real butter, and full fat cream cheese, I used margerine and non fat cream cheese and the dough was VERY soft and hard to handle. So, if you use those things, it should be alright. It also might help if you get the gel or thick wilton paste food coloring, then you are not adding a watery dye and making the dough softer than what would be easy to handle. GOOD LUCK!

I make 8 batches for my FIL and husband. This year my boys have discovered that they like 'em too. I'm doomed! laugh out loud

Those playdoh cookies look interesting!

I'm in search of a yummy sugar cookie recipe. I don't like the ones that come out like hard pucks when you bake them. I want to cut out shapes and let the boys decorate them.

Ideas?

Hmm... the Santa's Whiskers turned out to be very dry dough.. almost powder like. I had to keep adding milk just to make it try to stick together. It is chilling now. Will bake them off tomorrow. I just hope they keep their shape and not fall apart when I unwrap them. To the person that posted them (sorry I forget who it was), did you find them to be too dry to form into a roll?
no I have never had that problem with them....

I wonder if you did the play dough cookies with red green and white if they would look cool....I may have to try them!

Two packs of cream cheese.
One pack of Oreo or Nutter Butter cookies.
One pack of almond bark (white for Oreos, Dark for Nutter Butters)

Crush the cookies with a food processor.
Mix by hand with the cream cheese.
Refrigerate until stiff. (Insert bad joke)
Roll cookie/cheese mixture into 3/4 inch balls. (Insert another bad joke here)
Dip balls into melted almond bark. (Insert yet another tasteless joke)
Place balls on cookie sheet covered with wax paper. (It's getting old)
Place sheet in freezer.

Quick, easy, inexpensive, delicious
omg, someone made these and brought them into work ...and it was heaven in my mouth.

Here's a cute holiday treat that my kids had fun helping to make. They are yummy too.

Bacon and Eggs:

2 thin pretzel rods
Almond bark
yellow M&M's

melt almond bark, on wax paper place 2 pretzel rods, put a little almond bark over them and top with a yellow M&M. Tastes like white chocolate covered pretzels with a bit of chocolate from the M&M yummy
