I have just signed up as a new customer. Then I called 1-800-742-5877 to get the free one-year trial activated. You can activate it online yourself but it's not easy to do it correctly. The activation takes 48 hours to get your address populated into your local UPS pickup address book.

I place about 150 to 230 orders with Amazon per year over the last several years.
Almost all the packages were delivered by UPS. Unfortunately, that all changed
late last year when Amazon switched to post office delivery for 99% of the
packages to my town. I think I've only had 2 or 3 UPS packages during 2017.
The rest of the packages are delivered by a very grumpy mailman(sometimes
mailwoman) to my front door

Exactly the same here. My mail person particularly loves it when I have Amazon Pantry orders that include a case of bottled water. :-)

For the first the year - No.
After that, you will pay $11 per week for anytime smart Pickups. You can cancel the weekly service. But then you will have to pay for $6~7 for each on-demand pickup request.
This deal has nothing to do with getting packages. It saves businesses like mine at least $11/week. I ship a few hundred pounds a day UPS. To an Amazon inbound warehouse
No. No charge during the free year for inactivity. you can set your preferences for automatic pickup after you print a label, or on-demand only. they will even pickup items with labels you printed from third-party accounts (returning items to vendors, Amazon returns, whatever)
