An edgerouter x and ac lite have been my best netwroking purchase ever, comparable (or cheaper) than a consumer grade router/ap but significantly more stable, faster and better coverage.

I wouldn't say typical user. This stuff is for people who can follow technical guides or do not mind trouble shooting if something in the network goes wrong. I would never suggest a casual user try to set up an edge router without some understanding of networking.

hmm... Looks like it would cost me about $400 to get off my Meraki stuff. That would net me AC speeds and much faster firewall throughput. But I'd lose the security features of Meraki. Will have to think about it.

I just ordered a UAP-AC-LITE the other day via regular NewEgg, which is supposed to be delivered today. Probably too much work for me to save $7 but good deal for anyone buying.

Meraki has a lot of good stuff in there like traffic analytics, rogue AP containment, and the advanced security suite that basically blocks malicious sites at the router level. I also have all internet traffic logging out to a syslog share.

I haven't looked too far into Unifi so I'm not sure if it offers traffic analytics, or rogue AP containment, or the same level of security, but the firewall performance looks better (probably because it's not doing the same level of security checks).

Yes, the ES-48-500W/ES-48-750W (standalone managed) and US-48-500W/US-48-750W (single pane of glass, requires controller for configuration). Though neither of them are currently on sale.
