This is a great price for these external hard drives and it matches the previous +324 Frontpage deal for the WDBCKA0080HBK-NEBB. -Corwin

To follow up on my previous response; I received the drives I ordered yesterday, (Friday, 11/10/17) and cracked them open to find some similarities and differences in comparing them to the 8TB Easystore drives I bought this spring and summer.

Differences:
1. The packaging now has a Holiday offer on it, so presumably this is not excess Inventory from the summer that they are trying to unload. In a bright yellow circle on the front "HOLIDAY OFFER 250GB CLOUD STORAGE ". If your drive has this, I would take an educated guess that it is a similar drive to what is described here and NOT the drives from the summer.
2. The drive ID is WD80EMAZ.
3. This is NOT a Red labeled drive. Specifically the sticker is all white. (google image search the ID to see examples)

The models I cracked out of the EZStore in the spring were WD80EFZX and this summer were WD80EFAX.
WD = Western Digital
80 = 8TB Capacity
EF = Red Series
ZX = 128Mb Cache
AX = 256Mb Cache

Similarities:
1. Like the FAX it has 256Mb Cache
2. Like the FAX it uses firmware 83.HOA83 firmware. I see this through my Synology DSM Storage Manager app. I do not have access to look at the fw of the FZX

My best guess is that the WD80EMAZ is a re-labeled Red drive and the EM means Mobile.
The most important things for me are the same, and the differences are just in the label.
YMMV.

the only junk here is your comment. you are completely clueless. never give computer "advice" ever again.

neither WD nor Toshiba make any "junk" drives these days. only Seagate does, specifically their SMR line of "archive" drives.

for those of you here who are still confused, BOTH of the units in this deal use "red" drives. the confusing part here is that there are several variants of WD "red" drives.

the original 8TB red drive that we are accustomed to seeing is WD80EFZX, which was found in the first few production runs of the easyshare drives. it is based on Hitachi's aging 2nd gen Helioseal design. however, there is another variant of the 8TB "red" drive, which is WD80EFAX. the $130 drive in this deal uses this exact unit, but rebranded with a white label. i attached a picture for physical comparison. WD80EFAX appears to be based on the new 4th gen Helioseal design.

WD80EFAX, and by extension the $130 drive in this deal, is a drive based on the same design as the current 10TB red/gold/purple drives. WD80EFAX is currently only sold to OEMs like Netgear/QNAP/etc. eventually WD80EFAX will replace WD80EFZX as WD's standalone 8TB red drive they sell to end users.

having said all that, it's irrelevant which one you get. they will both perform more or less the same and both will have the same 2 year warranty. if you damage or lose the exterior shell when shucking either drive, you will have no warranty either way, be it red or white label.

I thought both of these are the same. People shucked the NEBB ones and they turned out to be Reds with white labels, just like the most recent NESN ones

Hmm the $129 still shows $299 for me.

*edit* Nevermind may have been a cache issue.

WDBCKA0080HBK-NESN has 128 cache
WDBCKA0080HBK-NEBB has 256 cache
besides the label, otherwise the same
obviously get the cheaper one with more cache

Holiday edition
Enjoy 250GB of free cloud storage included with this hard drive.

Might be a holiday bundled item only for the holidays? When gone gone. and back to the regular item model at $159
