Posting from the hospital bed with the lil' one on my lap. She arrived early this morning -- 8 lbs even, 21" long. She's absolutely beautiful and we are in love with her!

We almost ended up with a c-section because her big head was having trouble fitting through my pelvis. They decided to try forceps and once they got her down a bit with them, her heart rate dropped super low. So the doctor had to yank super hard and I had to push super hard to get her out alive. She wasn't breathing when they first got her out, and the cord was wrapped around her neck twice. Her first apgar test score was a 2, but then she perked up and her second was a 9. I ended up with a third-degree episiotomy Bigeye but I'm relieved that I was able to deliver vaginally, and so grateful she's alive!

I'll post some pics soon. heart
Toss up whether to end up with C/S incision or third degree episiotomy. . .I know I would have a difficult time deciding on that. Glad baby and momma are okay. Our babies share a birthday. Our OB/Gyn said that our baby was trying to shake her hand, and that's why we went to C/S. Regardless Cheers to happy healthy babies!

Congrats! I'm glad to hear that your baby girl is doing good, how scary! Also, don't try to do too much too soon. After my 4th degree tear it took every bit of 6 weeks before I didn't hurt. Let anyone and everyone do stuff for you Wink

Okay, I need to know what are the degrees of tears? Are you actually split open or did the doc cut? I have had it both ways, a small tear and a cut but never heard it phrased like that.

An episiotomy is a cut, a tear is just called a tear.

from pregnancy.about.com [about.com]

Episiotomies are measured in degrees -- the most common being a 2nd degree (midway between the vagina and the anus) and the least common being a 4th degree (Extending through the rectum, called the episiorectoprotomy). There are also different types of episiotomy. The midline is the most common in the USA (it extends directly towards the anus), and the mediolateral is a diagonal cut toward either side to prevent tearing into the rectum.
